Data Ethics Club meeting 15-12-21, 1pm UK time: A Question of Trust#

Meeting info#

Description#

You’re welcome to join us for our next Data Ethics Club meeting on Wednesday the 15th December at 1pm UK time. You don’t need to register, just pop in. Note that we will not be running an event as planned on December 1st due to the UCU Strike Action. This time we’re going to watch Question of Trust by philosopher Onora O’Neil, which is a lecture and Q&A about accountability and trust and the tension between transparency and surveillance.

Thank you to Charles Radclyffe for inspiring us to add this to the list. If you’re looking for further reading on this topic, you might want to look at this paper.

Discussion points#

There will be time to talk about whatever we like, relating to the paper, but here are some specific questions to think about:

  • Do you think that the public trust data science as a profession? What makes a data scientist trustworthy?

  • What are your thoughts on the use of statistics in the media, and how this contributes to trust/mistrust in scientific evidence by the public?

  • How can we improve the ‘assessability’ of data and statistics that are reported in the media?
